What it means
↑ Upright
Plain gladness, with nothing hidden in it. A child rides out bareback under a full sun, a red banner in hand and the garden wall behind, and what it brings to a reading is contentment, good fortune and warmth between people. Enjoy it openly, share it, and let things be as simple as they look.
↓ Reversed
Still a good card, with the brightness turned down: contentment that is real but partial, or a success you cannot quite enjoy, sometimes because you wanted the day to be perfect. Count what is going well, drop the comparison with how it might have been, and let a modest gladness be enough.
A great sun with a human face shines over a garden wall lined with sunflowers. Before it, a child crowned with flowers rides a white horse with neither saddle nor bridle, arms open, holding a banner. Waite sees the child as simplicity in the sense of wisdom, coming out of the walled garden, and the horse as nature led in perfect accord; this is the sun's direct light, where the Moon gave only reflected light.
Upright
Material happiness, fortunate marriage, contentment.
Reversed
The same in a lesser sense.
