What it means
↑ Upright
Only reflected light falls on the path between the towers; the dog and the wolf howl at it, and something crawls up out of the pool. This is the card of uncertainty, where fears grow in the half-dark and so do misreadings and quiet deceptions. Hold decisions until you can see better, check what you are told, and do not let imagination fill every gap.
↓ Reversed
The fog is thinning, though not yet gone. What remains is smaller — a half-truth, a mood that changes by the hour, a silence where an answer should be — and easier to see through. Trust what is steady and checkable over what is vivid, and let a passing fear go by before you decide anything.
Between two towers a path winds away to the far hills, which Waite calls the way out into the unknown. The moon shows its face within a crescent and lets fall drops of dew, the dew of thought in his reading. The dog and the wolf are the fears of the natural mind, one tame and one wild, and the crayfish climbing from the pool is something deeper still, which strives to surface and as a rule sinks back.
Upright
Hidden enemies, danger, calumny, darkness, terror, deception, occult forces, error.
Reversed
Instability, inconstancy, silence, lesser degrees of deception and error.
