What it means
↑ Upright
Beneath a great angel stand a man and a woman, open with each other, the tree of life behind one and the tree of knowledge, with its serpent, behind the other. The card is about attraction and love, and with them a choice to be made with your whole self rather than half of it. Say plainly what you value, and let the decision follow from that.
↓ Reversed
Two people out of step, or one person pulling two ways: a plan resting on attraction more than sense, or a choice made to please someone else. Before mending the bond, mend the decision — ask what you each actually want, and listen to the answer even when it is not the one you hoped for.
Under a high sun a great angel spreads its wings in blessing over a man and a woman, whom Waite likens to Adam and Eve in the first garden. The man stands before the tree of life, its branches burning like flames; the woman before the tree of knowledge, where a serpent coils among the fruit, for desire and the choice it brings. A single mountain rises between them, commonly read as the height the two may reach together.
Upright
Attraction, love, beauty, trials overcome.
Reversed
Failure, foolish designs. Another account speaks of marriage frustrated and contrarieties of all kinds.
