What it means
↑ Upright
Progress won by holding opposing pulls to one course. Two sphinxes, one black and one white, draw the chariot with no reins at all; only the driver's will keeps them together. Decide where you are going and hold to it when the pulls diverge — a victory taken for granted is the easiest kind to lose.
↓ Reversed
The opposing pulls have taken over: effort scatters, temper runs ahead of judgment, and a contest of wills threatens to become a quarrel nobody gains from. Stop pressing, work out what you are actually trying to reach, and drop every fight that does not serve it before you set off again.
A young prince in armor stands in his chariot under a canopy of stars, a scepter in his hand and a walled city behind him. The stars are commonly read as the higher guidance he travels under, the city as the settled world he has left to win his own place, and the winged sun on the front as the spirit driving him on. Waite calls him triumph in the mind: a victory of will, not of birth.
Upright
Succor, providence; also war, triumph, presumption, vengeance, trouble.
Reversed
Riot, quarrel, dispute, litigation, defeat.
