What it means
↑ Upright
Step away from the noise and think. An old man stands alone on a height, holding up a lantern with a star inside it: prudence, time apart, and the slow light of your own judgment. Withdraw long enough to see clearly, then raise the lamp, since what you find may light the way for others too.
↓ Reversed
Solitude that has hardened into hiding. Caution with no reason behind it keeps doors shut, and keeping to yourself can slide into keeping things back from people who ought to know. Ask what staying apart is protecting, let one trusted person in, and test your fear against what they see.
A gray-bearded figure, hooded and cloaked, has climbed to a snowy summit by night; one hand grips a staff, the other lifts a lantern. The star burning inside the lantern is commonly read as the Seal of Solomon, a sign of wisdom. Waite insists this is a card of attainment, not of searching: the old man has already reached the height, and his raised lamp says, in Waite's words, "where I am, you also may be."
Upright
Prudence, circumspection; also and especially treason, dissimulation, roguery, corruption.
Reversed
Concealment, disguise, policy, fear, unreasoned caution.
