Quantum Feng Shui Borrows a Mechanism Nobody Needed

A column defending quantum feng shui says entangling person, time, place and building explains the tradition. Entanglement is the one word that cannot.

IN PLAIN WORDS

  1. 1Entanglement cannot transmit an influence. The no-communication theorem forbids precisely the claim at the center of this framework — that changing one of person, time, place and building instantly changes the other three.
  2. 2The systems that compute anything never contained a mechanism. Eight Mansions takes a birth year and a sex; Flying Stars takes a facing in degrees and a build period. Both return tables of numbers. There is no qi term in the arithmetic for a physical theory to repair.
  3. 3A reading is checkable because the derivation is stated, not because the mechanism is known. The English-language flying star forward-reverse rule is wrong on all four corner facings, and we know that from five published charts — with no position on qi required.
  4. 4Ask which number changes. This site's code puts 2026's annual chart at center 1 with 8 in the east, from a rule one line long that you can check by counting back to 2019. That is what an auditable claim looks like.

On September 29 a Chinese column published under the title "Controversy Is Also Progress" argued that the ongoing quarrel between traditional feng shui practitioners and what it calls the quantum school, is itself a sign that the field is advancing. The school it is defending is credited to He Yimin, described there as the founder of quantum feng shui. Its central move is to take the four things a siting decision involves — the person, the time, the place and the building — and declare them a quantum entangled state, so that acting on any one of the four alters the other three instantly. That, the framework says, is why putting up a house or a grave changes the feng shui of a site, and why two different families living in the same apartment do not get the same outcome.

Two things should be said about the piece before anything else. It is a self-published column, not reporting: we looked for coverage of quantum feng shui in any news outlet and found none, so what follows is a response to a claim circulating online rather than to a story anybody has verified. And the column closes by conceding the point its own argument needed:

Whether quantum feng shui actually holds up, nobody dares vouch for.

— "Controversy Is Also Progress", September 29, 2026 (translated)

We think that sentence is the most accurate line in the piece, and that it settles more than the author intended.

There is no mechanism in the arithmetic to repair

Start with what the quantum framework says it is fixing. The three jobs its defenders give it are: to replace the traditional account of qi, to explain why the same person fares differently in different places, and to explain how a placed object neutralizes a sha, a harmful influence. All three are mechanism questions — questions about what is physically going on.

Now look at what the two compass systems actually consist of. Eight Mansions takes a birth year corrected to the Start of Spring (Li Chun) and a recorded sex, reduces it to a Kua number, and returns four favorable directions and four to avoid. Flying Star takes the period a building belongs to and its facing in degrees, and returns nine palaces each holding two numbers. Both are arithmetic. Both are tables and counts, from end to end. Neither of them has a qi term in it, because neither of them has any term that is not a number.

That is worth being concrete about, so here is a chart from this site's own code. The annual flying star chart for 2026, north-up, reading NW N NE then W C E then SW S SE, is 2 6 4 / 3 1 8 / 7 5 9: center 1, with 8 in the east. The rule that produces it is one line long — the center star was 3 in 2024 and drops by one each solar year — and you can check it by counting backwards against 2019, when it was 8. No step in that derivation refers to a field, a particle or a state. It is a count, and a count is either right or wrong.

So the quantum framework is not repairing a broken mechanism inside these systems. It is supplying a mechanism to systems that never had one and do not require one in order to produce their output. Whatever it is doing, it is not making the calculation better.

Entanglement is the one word that cannot do this job

The vocabulary is not being used loosely here. It is being used backwards, and in three separate ways.

Entanglement carries no influence. This is not a subtlety; it is a theorem, usually called the no-communication theorem, and it is the first thing anyone is taught about the subject. Measuring one half of an entangled pair changes nothing observable about the other half. The correlations only appear when you bring both sets of results together and compare them. The specific thing entanglement is proven not to do is let an action here produce an effect there — which is exactly the claim at the center of quantum feng shui, stated as its headline feature.

Entanglement has to be made, and it does not survive company. Two systems become entangled by interacting, and they stop being entangled on contact with anything else — decoherence. The whole engineering problem of quantum computing is holding a handful of particles in that state for microseconds, in a shielded fridge near absolute zero. A person, a calendar date, a plot of land and a concrete building are macroscopic objects in continuous thermal contact with everything around them. That is the regime decoherence describes best, and it is the regime where entanglement is most comprehensively absent.

Consistency is not evidence. The column's actual argument for the framework is that it supplies a logically self-consistent theory, where the tradition left things unexplained. Self-consistency is cheap. Any story carefully told is self-consistent; that is what careful telling means. What would make this an advance is a statement that could come out false — a number, a measurement, or a case where the quantum reading and the classical reading disagree and one of them loses. Nothing of that kind is on offer, which is precisely what the closing concession admits.

A mechanism is not what makes a reading checkable

This is the part that matters to anyone deciding whether to trust a reading, and it is the opposite of what the quantum framing implies. A reading is not auditable because you know why it works. It is auditable because the derivation is stated, reproducible, and comparable with somebody else's.

The sharpest example we have is in our own code. Almost every English-language source states the Flying Star forward-reverse rule as yang mountain flies forward, yin flies reverse. That rule is wrong. It happens to agree with reality for the four cardinal facings and gives the opposite answer for all four corner facings, NE SE SW NW. We know it is wrong because the rule is checkable: five published charts are held whole in our test suite, and the naive version fails them on the corners. Nobody needed a position on what qi is to carry out that audit. It was arithmetic against published tables.

The almanac side has an even cleaner case, because it needs no published almanac at all. The twenty-eight lunar mansions run through the seven luminaries — Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury — unbroken, and 28 is four sevens, so a mansion's luminary is always the weekday's. A cycle that has drifted by one day fails that test on every single date. That is a self-checking claim, and it is self-checking because it is a count.

Set a quantum claim beside either of those and the asymmetry is total. Ask what observation would show that person, time, place and building are not entangled, and there is no answer, because entanglement for macroscopic objects is not a thing you would go and measure — it is a thing already ruled out. The vocabulary looks like it is moving the claim toward physics. It is moving the claim out of the one domain where it could have been checked by counting, into a domain where it is simply false.

火WoodFireEarthMetalWater
The other layer people ask for a mechanism behind: 2026 is the fire horse year, Yang Fire Horse, and its year pillar is produced the same way as everything else here — a position in a cycle of ten stems and twelve branches. 2024 was the Yang Wood Dragon; count two forward. That is the whole derivation, and it is why the answer can be disputed by anybody with a calendar.

Why the move is tempting anyway

It is worth being fair about the pressure a practitioner is under. The question how does it actually work gets asked constantly, and the honest answer — the tradition does not supply a mechanism, and stating the rule does not require one — sounds like a retreat. Quantum vocabulary is a way of not retreating. We understand the appeal and still think the honest answer is the stronger one.

It is stronger because it is how most useful rules have arrived. Kepler had three laws of planetary motion for most of a century before anybody had a mechanism to put under them, and they were worth having throughout, because they predicted where a planet would be and could be checked against the sky. That is the bargain. A rule with no mechanism earns its place by predicting something checkable; a mechanism with nothing to predict earns nothing.

Measured against that bargain, this tradition divides cleanly. The calendrical parts — the lunar date, the stem-branch cycles, the mansions, the officers — predict things, get checked, and pass. The parts about how a life goes do not, and never have. Borrowing a physics word does not move anything from the second group into the first. Where the framework's earlier published descriptions go furthest, extending entanglement to the dead persisting in quantum form and acting on the living, the vocabulary is doing the most work and has the least to offer: that is not a claim physics declines to confirm, it is a claim physics has nothing whatever to say about.

Our honest read

The column's framing is half right. A tradition where nobody argues is a dead one, and argument about method is how the live parts stay live. But an argument is only progress if it can settle, and this one is built so that it cannot: one side cites texts, the other cites a word from physics that is being used to mean its own opposite, and no observation either side could make would move it.

We should also say what this site does, since it is the same question asked of us. Four calculators and an almanac, and not one of them asserts a mechanism anywhere. That is not modesty. It is that they do not have one, and that stating a rule and showing the steps is a complete job without one. The forward-reverse rule is checked against five published charts. The mansion cycle checks itself against the weekday. The lunar date is computed from three rules and no table, and tested against seven Chinese New Years and the leap months of 2020, 2023 and 2025. None of those tests improves if we add a theory of why any of it should matter, and every one of them would survive the theory being wrong.

The one thing we will not do is borrow a word from physics to cover the gap. The gap is real, we say so on the about page, and a reader who wants to know whether a reading can be trusted is better served by being handed the arithmetic than by being handed an entangled state.
