Ghost Month Ends, and the Auspicious-Day Calendars Come Back Out

The seventh lunar month closes this week and date-picking guides return in force — including ones that will tell you when to cut your hair. Which parts of this are load-bearing?

IN PLAIN WORDS

  1. 1Ghost Month (the 7th lunar month) ends around September 10, 2026, and date-picking guides are back.
  2. 2The calendar side of the almanac — solar terms, the 60-day cycle — is real astronomy.
  3. 3Whether a given day is "good for signing a contract" is tradition, not mechanism.
  4. 4Use date selection where the date is flexible. Don't let it delay anything with a real deadline.

The seventh lunar month — Ghost Month — closes around the tenth of September this year, and with it comes the annual return of the auspicious-day calendar. Guides are already circulating for what to schedule now that the window has passed, down to which days are good for a haircut.

Date selection is a real discipline. It is called Ze Ri, it has its own literature, and it is the oldest continuously used part of the almanac — the yi and ji columns, what is favored and what is avoided on a given day, worked out from the day's stem-branch, the constellation it falls under, and which spirits are considered present. Traditional Chinese households used it to pick wedding dates and groundbreaking dates for centuries. It is not made up.

It is also where this field is most often stretched past what it can carry. So a plain division, which is the most useful thing we can offer here.

The haircut calendars sit at the far end of that spectrum. If following one gives you a pleasant sense of timing, no harm done. If you are postponing something that matters because an app flagged the date, the calendar has stopped being a tradition and started being an obstacle.
