2027 Breaks the Dog, Not the Dragon

A NetEase column of October 14 says the Dragon breaks Tai Sui in 2027, citing a Dragon–Goat break. The table pairs the Goat with the Dog, and leaves no spare.

破ALMANACSUITSAVOID

IN PLAIN WORDS

  1. 1The sign breaking Tai Sui in 2027 is the Dog, and the Dragon stands in no named relation to the year at all. The break is six pairs — Rat–Rooster, Ox–Dragon, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Horse, Snake–Monkey, Goat–Dog. The Goat pairs with the Dog. The Dragon pairs with the Ox. Run this site's own branch-relation code against the Yin Fire Goat year and four signs come back: Rat (harm), Ox (clash and punishment), Goat (its own year), Dog (punishment and break).
  2. 2The count is fixed by the name, so you can check it without owning a table. "The six breaks" means six; six pairs exhaust the twelve branches, and every branch therefore has exactly one break partner. A page naming two signs that break Tai Sui has contradicted itself before you look anything up. The six harms have the same shape, so exactly one sign is harming Tai Sui too.
  3. 3Five headings, four signs — which is where the extra sign comes from. The Ox carries clash and punishment together; the Dog carries punishment and break. One row per category needs a fifth sign and a Goat year does not have one. The layout works in an Ox year, where the five land on five distinct signs and the Dragon genuinely is breaking Tai Sui — the last such year was 2021, Yin Metal Ox; the next is 2033, Yin Water Ox.
  4. 4A second page gave 2027's break to the Horse, citing a Horse–Goat break. The Horse and the Goat are not a break pair. They are the year's six-harmony pair, the most favorable of the branch relations — printed as the adverse one.

A NetEase column published on October 14, 2026, sets out the signs in conflict with Tai Sui in 2027 under five headings — own year, clash, punishment, break, harm — with one sign under each. Four of the five are right, and stated with the branch pair they come from, which is more than most such pages do. The fifth says the Dragon breaks Tai Sui, on the ground that the Dragon and the Goat break with one another. That pair is not in the table.

2027 is a Yin Fire Goat year. The solar year opens at the Start of Spring (Li Chun), which our own solver puts at 09:46 Beijing time on February 4, 2027, and the year branch is the Goat. Everything below follows from that one branch and the branch-relation tables this site already runs for its personal reading, so none of it is a new claim — it is the existing code pointed at next year.

The table, and what the Goat breaks with

The break is a set of six pairs: Rat–Rooster, Ox–Dragon, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Horse, Snake–Monkey, Goat–Dog. Six pairs, twelve branches, each branch in exactly one of them. The Goat's partner is the Dog. The Dragon's partner is the Ox. So in a Goat year the sign carrying the break is the Dog — which carries punishment as well, because Ox–Dog–Goat is one of the two three-way punishment groups. The Dragon stands in no named relation to the Goat at all.

Run through the function that already answers this on our personal reading, the Yin Fire Goat year returns four signs and no more: the Rat by the Rat–Goat harm; the Ox by the Ox–Goat clash and again by punishment; the Goat because the year is its own; the Dog by the Dog–Goat punishment and the Goat–Dog break. The NetEase list has the first four of those relations and attaches three of them to the right signs. It is the Dog's second label that goes missing, and it goes to a sign that has none.

Why it is the Dragon that gets written in

The five relations do not land on five signs. The Ox takes clash and punishment together, the Dog takes punishment and break, and the five therefore fall on four signs. A layout with one row per category needs a fifth name, and a Goat year does not have one to give. Something has to fill the row.

The five-row layout is not wrong everywhere, which is presumably why it survives. It works exactly in an Ox year: the Ox takes its own year, the Goat takes clash and punishment, the Dog takes punishment, the Dragon takes break, the Horse takes harm — five distinct signs, one per row. And in an Ox year the Dragon really is breaking Tai Sui, because the Dragon breaks with the Ox. The last one was 2021, Yin Metal Ox; the next is 2033, Yin Water Ox. We cannot show that the 2027 lists inherited their Dragon from an Ox-year template and we are not going to assert it. What we can say is narrower and enough: the entry is right for the Ox and wrong for the Goat, and the rule printed beside it names the Goat.

Breaking Tai Sui — the Dragon: Dragon and Goat break each other; good things come only through many trials.

— NetEase, October 14, 2026 (translated)

A second page, published on Sohu on October 8, goes further in the same direction. It states that five signs are involved and then names six, and it says the Horse breaks Tai Sui, on the ground of a Horse–Goat break. The Horse and the Goat are not a break pair — they sit one place apart in the cycle of twelve, not three. They are the year's six-harmony pair, which of all the branch relations is the one read most favorably, and it appears on that page as the adverse one. The same page also gives the Dragon the break, so the Goat finishes with two break partners, neither of them the Dog, while the Dog is listed under punishment alone.

歲NNEESESSWWNW
"Break" appears twice in 2027 and means two different things. The Year Breaker (Sui Po) is a direction: the sector opposite Tai Sui, which in a Goat year puts Tai Sui in SW1 (Wei, the Goat), the first mountain of the southwest, and the Year Breaker in NE1 (Chou, the Ox), the first mountain of the northeast — both computed here by the same function the personal reading uses. Breaking Tai Sui is a sign, and in 2027 that is the Dog. A reader who has met only the second will reasonably assume the northeast warning is about them; it is about a sector of a building, and it applies to the building whoever lives in it.

What this costs a reader

Lists of this kind usually sit above a booking form for the temple rite that appeases Tai Sui. We are not going to argue here about whether the rite does anything, because we have no way to test it and we say the same about our own tools. The narrower question is the one that can actually be settled, and it is a question about a lookup: a Dragon-born reader is being told they stand in a relation to 2027 that the table does not contain, and a Dog-born reader is being told they carry one label where the table gives two. Lookups are right or wrong, and a reader cannot audit this one while the rule beside it contradicts the answer above it.

The honest version, which somebody already published

One of the pages we read does the thing we would have done. Good Day Toolbox (Hao Rizi Gongjuxiang) sets out three incompatible versions of 2027's punishment and break beside one another — one giving the break to the Dragon, one giving both punishment and break to the Dog, one splitting clash and punishment across the Ox — and says plainly that the versions conflict and that it is listing them as found rather than choosing between them. Its note that the common version is the Dragon one is, as far as we can tell from what we read, accurate. That page is more useful than a clean answer would have been, because a reader who later meets two different lists now knows why there are two.

The reason to care is not that a folk list has an error in it. It is that this particular error is cheap to catch and nobody caught it. The break is six pairs over twelve branches, the year's branch is one animal, and the answer is a lookup with no free parameters — so any published list of signs in conflict with Tai Sui is falsifiable in about a minute, by arithmetic a reader can do on paper. Our own personal reading runs this table against the current solar year rather than next, so it will not answer 2027 for you until the Start of Spring passes; the table it runs is the one above, and that much you can check today.
