What it means
↑ Upright
Strange news, announced by a young messenger holding a staff in leaf. In your life this may be someone eager and loyal who speaks up for you or brings word; taken as advice, it asks you to try the new thing with a beginner's appetite. Send the message, ask the question, and explore before you judge.
↓ Reversed
Unsettling news, or enthusiasm that flares and then wanders off. Met in another person, it is someone keen but unreliable, full of announcements that come to little; in yourself, ideas started and dropped before they can be tested. Pick one, give it a fixed trial, and see it through to the end of that trial.
A young man stands in an open, desert-like landscape with three pyramid-shaped hills behind him, holding a tall staff in leaf and looking up at the sky, as if about to make an announcement. His tunic is patterned with salamanders, the lizards once believed to live in fire, which mark the suit's element. Waite places him in the act of proclamation, a bearer of strange tidings: enthusiasm at its first stage, curious and eager, not yet tried by any real task.
Upright
Dark young man, faithful, a lover, an envoy, a postman. Beside a man, he will bear favorable testimony concerning him. A dangerous rival, if followed by the Page of Cups. Has the chief qualities of his suit. He may signify family intelligence.
Reversed
Anecdotes, announcements, evil news. Also indecision and the instability which accompanies it.
