What it means
↑ Upright
The knight sits still on a heavy horse at the edge of a plowed field, in no hurry at all. In your life he is the person who turns up and finishes; as counsel, he is the useful, responsible manner the matter asks of you — dutiful, methodical, upright, the usefulness and responsibility Waite gives him. Keep a pace you can sustain, and let consistency do the work that speed cannot.
↓ Reversed
Steadiness has settled into standing still: routine without purpose, a task put off once and then again, a calm that is really discouragement. Someone around you may have stopped trying, or the stalling may be yours. Set the smallest next step you can finish, and finish it; momentum is rebuilt in units that small.
A knight in bright steel armor sits motionless on a heavy black horse, holding a pentacle in his open hand, with sprigs of oak leaves on his helmet and on the horse's head. Before him stretch plowed fields ready for sowing. Of the four knights, his is the only one whose horse stands still, and Waite notes that he shows his symbol without looking into it; the oak and the furrows mark the patient, dutiful labor he stands for.
Upright
Utility, serviceableness, interest, responsibility, rectitude—all on the normal and external plane.
Reversed
Inertia, idleness, repose of that kind, stagnation; also placidity, discouragement, carelessness.
