What it means
↑ Upright
A pause, accepted rather than fought. He hangs by one foot from living wood, calm-faced, a halo around his head, and from where he hangs the whole matter looks different. Let go of something — a plan, a point of pride — and use the stillness to see what you could not see while moving.
↓ Reversed
A pause that has gone on too long, or a sacrifice nobody asked for. Sometimes the stall comes from refusing to give anything up, sometimes from waiting for the crowd to decide first, and either way you stay suspended without the insight that makes suspension worthwhile. Choose what to let go of, or choose to move.
A man hangs head down by one ankle from a T-shaped beam, the shape Waite calls a Tau cross. His free leg is bent behind the other to make a second cross, and his hands are hidden behind his back, commonly read as surrender: he has stopped trying to act. Waite asks us to notice three things: the wood still bears leaves, the face is entranced rather than suffering, and the whole figure shows life held in suspension.
Upright
Wisdom, circumspection, discernment, trials, sacrifice, intuition, divination, prophecy.
Reversed
Selfishness, the crowd, body politic.
